Aromatherapy 101 Series – Part 1

Aromatherapy 101 Series(2)

With the proliferation of essential oil companies, and especially MLM companies, aromatherapy has become a booming business these days. As a natural health care practitioner, I am excited to see this effective, natural modality becoming so popular.

However, there is a down side as well. With so many people selling, purchasing and using essential oils so casually, education has gone by the wayside and unfortunately there are a large percentage of essential oil users who have only a sales representative’s marketing materials to guide them.

Unfortunately, more and more avoidable injuries and reactions are occurring on a regular basis with this new surge of essential oil enthusiasts. However, with a little bit more information and education, this can be largely averted and the genuine efficacy of aromatherapy can be truly uncovered.

Learn about how to use aromatherapy safely and effectively in my guest post at Hybrid Rasta Mama today.

  1. I am so glad I clicked over to read the full article. You covered a LOT of excellent information in a way that was informative, and refreshing. I agree, I also am of the British school of thought, but think that what most American EO users consider the “French” school is different than it actually is. In France, EOs which are ingested are actually *prescribed* by physicians who are trained in EO use. Here in the U.S., people who say they follow the French school of thought generally do not have access to doctors trained in EO use, so many follow advice from sources of various quality, unfortunately.

    1. Yes, I agree Eileen, that is often what happens. Unfortunately, I am hearing about lots of adverse effects as a result…

  2. This is a topic that just drives me insane. They’re are way too many people now who think they “know” how to use essential oils without proper education. Your article is a much needed guide for anyone interested in delving into these potent remedies. I cringe to think what taking so many oils internally on a regular basis is doing to people’s insides. On top of that, the vast majority of people suggesting internal use have NO background in clinical aromatherapy…it’s just mind boggling. Simply applying them correctly on our skin is more than enough AND it bypasses the need for digestion which can alter the oil’s effectiveness anyways. Topical, in 99% of cases, is hands down the way to go. I also agree with your stance on dilution to save our resources. One drop can go such a long way, so why use 20? Sure, diffusers are nice and at times pretty beneficial, but they are also the most wasteful way to use oils. I can go on and on 🙁

I myself use and sell (rather impassively I might add) YL essential oils….but I have to say I’m feeling pretty put off by the whole thing to be honest. There are just too many out there who just don’t KNOW what they are doing.

Anyways, great post! Keep it up!

  3. Thanks for the comment Tash. It’s something I, too, feel very strongly about. It’s important to educate yourself about any new practices you are going to adopt, but especially one in which there is risk for possible toxicity and injury.
